It’s the holidays! You may be watching what you eat for your waistline, but have you considered how foods might affect your oral health? No need skip all holiday treats altogether. Here are five yummy alternatives.

Nuts
In general, nuts are an excellent choice for most snackers. Nuts contain calcium and other minerals that are great for your teeth. Chewing nuts also stimulate saliva which protects against bacteria. For individuals with cracked or damaged teeth, braces or dentures, (read one of our previous posts to learn more about dentures)should probably avoid nuts altogether. And never use your teeth to crack shells.

Plain Greek Yogurt
Who can resist a creamy and cool snack that is good for your overall health?

The calcium and phosphates in yogurt can strengthen, and possibly remineralize teeth.

Need a bit of sweetness? Add some honey, a natural antiseptic, or top with healthy fruit.

Dark chocolate
If you’re a chocoholic and simply can’t help yourself, opt for dark chocolate.

Look for chocolate that is at least 60% real cocoa or higher. Dark chocolate contains flavonoids that can protect your body against many diseases including diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure–all of which can have a significant effect on your dental health.

Like any treat, moderation remains key. Also note: milk chocolate and white chocolate do not offer these benefits.

Sugar-Free Gum
Finishing off a meal with a stick of sugar-free gum is an excellent way to protect your teeth. Not only does sugar-free gum induce extra saliva which helps remove bacteria and plaque, the gum may help remove sticky food remnants, including pieces of hard candy and dried fruit. For best results chew for at least 20 minutes. Look for the ADA seal, ensuring the gum uses sugar-free, non-cavity causing sweeteners.

Smoothies
Smoothies are an excellent and filling treat–as long as you use the right ingredients! Start with milk, plain yogurt. Sweeten naturally by adding fibrous fruits like apples and bananas. You can also toss in vegetables. Carrots add great flavor, lots of vitamins and minerals and plenty of additional health benefits.

Let’s not forget that raw fruits, veggies, and cheese are always a wise food choice for both your teeth and overall health. They are a classic go-to!
