Dr. Hechtman’s Dental Practice Offers Complete and Partial Dentures
A denture is a great solution for missing teeth and surrounding tissue. They are made to resemble your natural teeth and often will enhance your smile. There are two types of dentures; partial and complete dentures. Partial dentures are used when some natural teeth are in place, and fill in spaces created by missing teeth. Partial dentures also prevent other teeth from shifting. When all teeth are missing, complete dentures are your best solution.

Dentures are durable, however, they won’t last forever. Although, dentures are very durable and will last many years, but may have to be remade, repaired, or readjusted due to normal wear. As dentures age, they become more porous and capable of housing harmful and odor causing bacteria. There can be side effects with wearing dentures older than seven years, which include, accelerated resorption of the gums and headaches. Replacement is suggested every five-seven years, to help maintain a healthy natural smile.
Do You Need Partial Or Full Dentures?
Caring for Your Complete or Partial Dentures
Below are some signals that indicate dentures need attention:
Do not adhere to your gums as first installed
Often get headaches, neck pain, and joint problems
Loose fitting, not able to chew food very well
Proper Dental Care
Individuals with dentures, whenever possible, should remove their prosthesis overnight. In addition, we recommend a thorough dental exam of both your dentures and the tissues that support your dentures annually.
Prolonged exposure to air can cause your denture become discolored and brittle. When you remove your denture in the evening, place in a covered receptacle that is filled with warm water or a special soaking solution. Additional information on dentures can be found here (clicking on this link, takes you to the Mouth Healthy website created by the American Dental Association).
Brushing
We also recommend “daily massaging” of your tongue, gums, and roof of your mouth with a moistened soft-bristle brush. This will aid in stimulating the circulation of your gum tissue and helps to eliminate bacteria in your mouth. You should rinse your mouth frequently to eliminate bacteria. This will also help to keep your breath fresher throughout the day.
We recommend you rinse your dentures thoroughly under warm water before placing back in your mouth. Always use a soaking solution to help maintain optimal comfort.
