Electronic cigarettes (e-cigs), have become a popular alternative to conventional cigarettes. Millions of smokers have “made the switch” thinking it is a healthier choice. We already know how toxic smoking cigarettes is to your oral and physical health. It Causes all types of cancer throughout your body and negatively impacts your oral health leading to a number of serious dental issues.  But what about e-cigs? How does it affect your dental health?   Dr. Hechtman at Walled Lake Dentistry can answer any of your questions about oral health and the effects of vaping.

E-cigarettes simulate the experience of smoking.

It is a battery operated device resembling a cigarette that heats up and vaporizes liquid nicotine. The user inhales and exhales the vapor just like a traditional cigarette, without the tobacco. This process is called “vaping” and although it does not contain tobacco, it still causes dental problems due to the nicotine.

Nicotine inhalation poses a number of oral health concerns.  One harmful effect is that it inhibits the mouth’s ability to produce saliva. Saliva acts a protector to the gums and without it, bacteria can build up and cause tooth decay as well as dry mouth. Also, nicotine constricts blood vessels and reduces blood flow. This reduces cellular regeneration, healing ability as well as the mouth’s ability to fight off bacteria leading to periodontal disease.

Furthermore, the nicotine vapors can have a negative impact on gum tissue because it causes the release of inflammatory proteins in the gum tissue, just like cigarettes. The cells can become stressed and damaged and lead to a number of dental issues. Although e-cigs may be healthier due to the lack of tobacco, the nicotine is still a factor when it comes to oral health.
