Family Dentist Dr. Hechtman Offers Options in Getting Your Smile Back!

Our Walled Lake practice is experienced in replacing dental crowns and fillings while making your teeth look natural, and feeling great. Since the popularity of veneers, crowns are not used as much for cosmetic correction. However, there are circumstances where a crown is necessary to repair fractures or a large filling that is damaged or decayed. Also, crowns are often needed when fillings are not enough to protect and strengthen a tooth.

Many individuals still experience some tooth decay, no matter how careful you are about brushing and flossing. It is important to deal with cavities as quickly as possible in order to contain the problem and prevent further complications including; swelling, pain, and difficulty chewing. In many situations, dental fillings will be a good solution, however, a more aggressive treatment, such as dental crowns will be required.

What is a crown?

When getting a filling, the dentist drills away the damaged/decayed portion of the tooth and will fill in the hole. A dental crown takes this process an extra step by covering the tooth. There are many benefits of the crown including, adding strength, and protection from breaking.

There are a variety of materials from which crowns are made, these include metal and porcelain. Each of these materials have benefits that are appropriate for certain situations. Most metal crowns are made of gold, palladium or base metal alloys. Crowns in general, come in one of three varieties: all metal, all porcelain, and metal base with porcelain top.

Depending on the patients circumstances, there are many options for dental care including bridges and fillings. We recommend treatment for a crown if there is substantial tooth decay or if the tooth is fractured. Often, a crown will prevent requiring an extraction or root canal.

In circumstances where you have already had a root canal, a crown is a great option to protect the tooth from further damage, making it less likely to break in the future.
