It is no secret that brushing your teeth twice daily is the key to maintaining a healthy mouth. Making sure that you are doing it effectively is just as important! It’s more than just putting a toothbrush in your hand with a squirt of toothpaste and rubbing it all over your teeth for 10 seconds. Just because you get that “minty” feeling in your mouth after a “quick brush,” doesn’t mean that plaque and bacteria are kept at bay. Our hygienists at our Walled Lake Dental Office, are always ready and willing to demonstrate good brushing technique.

Get the most out of your brushing routine in order to keep your teeth and oral health in shape.

There are a few things to keep in mind when it comes to your toothbrush and your teeth. First, the toothbrush. Is it right for you? Make sure it’s the right size for your mouth and that it feels comfortable in your hand. If it’s too big or too small, it won’t be as effective. Soft bristles and using a gentle motion are a good idea in order to prevent gum damage. Brushing “hard” may do more harm than good. Second, take your time, don’t rush! You have a lot of teeth so make sure none of them are ignored.

Also, it’s a good idea to brush with a fluoride toothpaste in order to fight off tooth decay. Lastly, don’t forget to floss and brush your tongue. Flossing in between your teeth after they have been brushed is the only way to prevent plaque.
